Charles Lankester, a British botanist, arrived in Costa Rica in 1900 at the age of 21.  In 1917 he  bought 25 acres near Cartago to preserve the local flora, especially orchids and bromeliads.  These Gardens are currently run by the University of Costa Rica.  Few people realize there was a second Lankester Gardens in Rio Segundo, only minutes from the Juan Santamaria International Airport..

This property  boasts nearly 8 acres of exotic orchids and plants from around the world.  The gently inclined, landscaped paths meander through lush tropical plants and towering bamboo. This was the seasonal home of Charles Lankester.  His family used to arrive in a horse drawn buggy to enjoy the spring fed pool surrounded by flowering ginger and giant bamboo cathedral.  This is also the site of the Pelton pump which uses the impact of the falling creek water and sends it up to the main house.

The top 2 hectares are fully landscaped and gently inclined, dropping 20 meters over a 1000 meters:  You see: Cocoa Trees, Heliconias, Macadamia Nut Trees, Giant Bamboo, nine types of Ginger, Incense Trees, Orchids, Tropical Conifer, Bromeliads and many fruit trees from Asia; water apples, rose apples, mango’s, tangerine, guavas, guayabanas, anonas, jak fruit, mangosteen, in the orchards and surrounding gardens The Bottom hectare  is a nearly level grassy pasture with banana and citrus trees including oranges, tangerine and grapefruit.  A small creek is home to a patch of water cress and a giant stand of Baton Ginger.
